Cornelius wins Hamilton Haven card contest

PRESCOTT – For the second consecutive year, Ruby Cornelius won the Hamilton Haven holiday card contest.
Cornelius, a fifth grader at Prescott Junior High School, also won the event last year. Leyla Zacharias was the runner up again this year. The presentation was made Friday afternoon in the cafeteria at PJHS by Leslie Hughes, administrative assistant at Hamilton Haven, and Michelle Hamilton-Rhodes, co-founder of the facility.
The mission of Hamilton Haven is to offer immediate, short-term relief for families and individuals transitioning from crisis to stability. Hughes said this contest is an example of the community working together to help one another in times of need. Last year, the contest was held for students in grades two and four at Prescott Elementary. This year, it was for students in grades five and six.
The concept is to create a card Hamilton Haven can use to mail out to its friends and donors at the end of the year. “We have seen that creativity and talent are among many student here,” Hughes said. “Five judges participated in choosing who to honor this year – without knowing who the artists were.”
PJHS Principal Jay Turley organized the presentation with Shelby Burke, art teacher, getting the students involved.
