Prescott native honored with legacy of education

PRESCOTT – Born in Beirne, Arkansas, MSGT. Buford L. Royston’s heart always resided in Prescott, where he spent his formative years attending McRae Middle School and ultimately graduating in 1955. A cherished figure in the town, he tied the knot with his high school sweetheart, Earlene Reynolds Royston, before embarking on his journey in the United States Air Force.

Throughout his life, Royston maintained a profound love for Prescott. In honor of his devotion to both the town and its youth, his family sought to nurture the educational aspirations of young boys in Prescott. As a tribute to his legacy, they generously donated five meticulously chosen books, tailored to inspire and guide young minds, to the Prescott Nevada County Library in his honor.

“Prescott held a special place in Buford’s heart. It’s where he grew up, where he returned for reunions, and where his extended family resides,” shared a family member. “Being part of the community was integral to him.”

This act of philanthropy stands as a testament to Royston’s commitment to his roots. The Royston and McKee families take immense pride in establishing this lasting tribute, aiming to fortify the educational journey of the town’s younger generation. The five books, symbolizing Royston’s dedication to education and community, will serve as a beacon of inspiration for the youth of Prescott, Arkansas.

In a poignant gesture timed with the upcoming Black History Month, these books, now available for checkout at the Prescott Nevada County Library, aim to inspire and enlighten. Titles such as “Jacob’s Ghetto” by Travis Peagler, “Black Boy JOY” by Kwame Mbalia, “The Stars Beneath Our Feet” by David Barclay Moore, “Ghost Boys” by Jewell Parker Rhodes, and “Destined for Greatness” by Last Tex promise to enrich young minds and celebrate diversity.

The families express immense pride in cementing Buford’s legacy through this educational initiative, underscoring their commitment to supporting the educational journey of Prescott’s young people. These literary treasures, filled with Buford’s spirit, stand as a beacon of inspiration for the youth, embodying his dedication to education and community, ensuring his impact endures for generations to come.
