Hope School Board

The Hope School Board met in the High School Auditorium on Tuesday (3-12). The school board approved the minutes from three different meetings, as well as the expenditures before giving the superintendent’s awards Those recognized for Clinton Primary were TaMez Rodgers, Dionna Jacobs, Tracy Delgado, Dorothy Wright and Grace Life Fellowship. For HAPS, those recognized were Cheyanne Baker, Viviana Gonzalez, Nevada Clark, and Main Street Cleaners.  For Yerger, those recognized were Jonathon Fischer, Candie West, Earlene Gulley, Jessie Henry, and Jimmy Courtney. For CATS, those recognized were Elizabeth Hayes, Lisa Trotter, Mrs. Vance, Eddrick Lard and Larry Jonson. For Hope High School, those recognized were James Artis, Terry Harden, Jeffrey Burton and Theresa James, Sherry Mullens and Tymesha Whyte and Lance Hawley.  Pre K’s recognitions were Emberlee Simmons, Daphne Simmons, Cherlyn Brandon, Destiny Fields and Our Lady of Good Hope Parents. Also recognized was Jeff Matlock for his band and tech connection.
Jill Self spoke about the calendar options for 2024-2025. The first option received 78% of the community vote and was recommended to the School Board. The Hope School District will also go from counting days to hours.  The minimum required by the state is 1068 hours which could be covered in 171 days. This calendar builds in an extra 5 days with one in February and one in April.  Board member Kathryn Dickinson asked if there would be an issue starting school on August 12th with Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Crossley responding the state should approve as many districts are applying for the waiver.  Dickinson noted she likes the breaks that are included in the new calendar. Dr. Crossley said there were 3 inclement weather days built in. Teachers will still need to be there 190 days.  Self said she tried to protect summer, specifically June and July as it is a drastic change and parents have already made plans for those two months.  Bubba Powers moved to adopt the alternate calendar. It was seconded and passed. Board member Alvis Hamilton thanked Self for her efforts.
The next topic was a state grant for high impact tutoring which deals with 100 students. There was a motion to accept by Powers which was seconded and passed.
For the school choice applications Dr. Crossley recommended approval and there was a motion to accept by Margaret Moss which was seconded and passed,
The personnel packet had no new hires, only resignations.  These were approved and the meeting adjourned.
