Odis Vickers, Sr. – Hope Prescott

Odis Vickers, Sr., 84, of Hope, Arkansas, completed his journey on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Born in Washington, Arkansas, to Ella Mae Vickers and Essie Goodloe, Odis was known for his quiet and soft-spoken nature, which belied his incredible singing talent. A natural entertainer, he brought joy to those around him, and, in his younger days, he and his friends liked to perform.

Growing up in Hempstead County, Odis attended the segregated school in Guernsey, Arkansas, but left early to work, picking peaches at a nearby orchard and transporting workers. He later became a dedicated employee at Myers Bakery, where he worked for nearly 30 years before retiring.In retirement, Odis cared for his ailing mother until her passing. He cherished the outdoor activities of Hempstead County, such as fishing and hunting. In his later years, he enjoyed family time, spoiling the younger generations, reading his Bible, and watching Westerns on TV. He found peace with God and attended Galilee Baptist Church in Hope, where his son pastors.

Odis was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and mother of his children, Bobbie Jean Horton and second wife, Juanita Phillips; his son, Terry Vickers and two grandsons: Deshun Willis and Richard Rone, Jr. His legacy lives on through his children: Pastor Odis Vickers Jr. (Ora) and Jackie Vickers (Shayla) of both of Hope, Shannon Vickers of Erie, Pennsylvania, Gloria Underwood, Gilda Muldrow (Tracy), Dwanna Parker (Manuel), Unlanda Vickers, Tonya Vickers and Denise Sears (Cecil) all of Hope; stepchildren: Charinda Phillips of Texarkana, Texas, Ray Phillips (Djanna) Arlington, Texas, Clinton Phillips (Shameka) and Tamlea Phillips both of Hope; cousins: John Vickers and Fana Smith both of Hope, Bertha Mae Vickers of Baltimore, Maryland; good friend, Travis Pace of Hope and a host of grands, great-grands, other relatives and friends.

His Homegoing Celebration Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Hope, Arkansas. Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Brandon’s Mortuary in Hope. Mr. Vickers will be laid to rest at Westmoreland Cemetery in Washington, Arkansas. A repass will follow at Greater Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
