4-H Career Day Draws Hundreds to Prescott

Prescott 4-H held a career development event on Friday (2-14) spread across the city. At the high school was Livestock, Ag Mechanics and Electricity. Behind the high school, students identified tree species as well as tree diseases. At the fairgrounds, there were vet sciences, wildlife, poultry, ag business management, dairy, and a horse contest. At the industrial park, soil was excavated with the help of the city of Prescott and Nevada County. This was for a soil analysis that involved the students climbing into the hole.
The whole event was a fundraiser for 4-H and resources were drawn from across the state. Help was received from NRCS with the soil analysis and forestry. The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville helped with the livestock judging. SAU helped with the horse contest and the vet science. Nevada High School conducted the wildlife event. Prescott High School collaborated with events at the school.
There were test answer sheets with bubbles to be filled in by the students. These sheets were then graded at the extension office. The 4-H program is similar to FFA which is really into competitions. Students learn any answer is better than none. Awards are given out and sent to the schools. This event prepared students who want to go into an agricultural program in college.
This is the fourth year the event has been held. The event keeps growing in numbers with a total of 931 students from 57 different schools participating. The schools included Velonia, Little Rock West, Ouachita, Lafayette, Ashdown, Horatio, Bismark, Bradley, Beebe, Searcy, Crossett, White River, Idabel (OK), Bruno, Cabot, Mountain Pine, Emerson, Fouke, Des Arc, Prairie Grove as well as  local schools including Prescott, Blevins, Nevada, Hope, and Spring Hill.  Students came from as far away as 223 miles (from Prairie Grove near Fayetteville).
Prescott 4-H is grateful for all the help they received as they couldn’t have done it without the help of the community. Contributors included the Economic Development Committee, Nevada County, and Farm Credit as well as the ones already mentioned above. Farm Credit provided lunch.

People who supplied livestock and horses for the 4H contest were the Sweat Family, Southern Arkansas University, PHFF Cindy Ham/Debbie Manning, Stone livestock, Brad Mcginley, Maye Club lambs, Plyer and son Charolais, Rafter J rowdy riders horse club (Lacy Jo Singleton).
