Culvert washout closes Hempstead 16

WASHINGTON – Friday night an early Saturday morning, the Washington area received in excess of seven inches of rainfall. The resulting runoff damaged Hempstead County Road 26, washing out a culvert and the approach to the Ozan Creek bridge.

The damage to the culvert and bridge have left some families along County Road 26 stranded until Hempstead County crews can repair the road.

Personnel from Washington VFD and Ozan VFD responded to check the road and notified the county dispatcher of the damage. County road crews responded to place barricades to close the road and protect the public.
