A Newcomer’s Taste of Hope: Discovering Community Through Flavor and Fun

As a new resident of Hope, Arkansas, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I wandered into downtown for the 3rd Annual Taste of Hope. I’d heard it was a celebration of local food and community, but what I found was something far richer—a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that made me feel instantly at home.
The streets were buzzing with energy. Families, friends, and neighbors strolled from booth to booth, muffin tins in hand, sampling bites from over a dozen local restaurants. I tried smoky ribs from BigMacs BBQ, a savory gumbo from Hebrews 11 & 1, and a surprisingly delicious jalapeño cornbread from Powell’s Grocery. Each dish told a story, not just of flavor, but of the people behind it.
The theme this year— “Oh, the Places We Will Go”—was inspired by Dr. Seuss and reflected Hope’s recent recognition as an Associate Level member of Main Street Arkansas. That whimsical spirit was everywhere: from the colorful chalk art on the sidewalks to the paint-by-number mural designed by local artist Carrie Sherbert, which I even got to help fill in.
I was especially charmed by the creative auction items—a pink wheelbarrow, a year’s worth of baked goods, and even a “Gift Card Bingo” game that had kids and adults laughing together. The community also voted on its next big project: renovating the Hope Downtown Network headquarters, a decision that felt like a collective investment in the town’s future.
As the sun set, families gathered in Pocket Park for a free outdoor screening of The Lorax. Sitting there with my plate of local treats and a heart full of gratitude, I realized this wasn’t just a food festival, it was a celebration of Hope’s spirit. Taste of Hope isn’t just about what’s on the plate; it’s about the people who make this town feel like home. For anyone new to Hope, or just passing through, this event is a perfect introduction to the warmth, creativity, and community pride that define this small but mighty town.
