SARATOGA – Investigators from multiple agencies, including the 8th South Drug Task Force (Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department, Miller County Sheriff’s Office, and Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office), the 9th West Drug Task Force (Little River County Sheriff’s Office, Howard, Sevier, and Pike Counties), the Texas Department of Public Safety, Arkansas State Police, Ashdown Police Department, and the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, recently conducted a joint investigation targeting the illegal drug trade in the Ark-La-Tex region Thursday.
As a result of this investigation, three individuals; Kataka Thomas, Tonya Stapleton, and Austin Hooks, were arrested on charges related to the trafficking of fentanyl, possession of firearms, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
A search warrant was executed in the 600 block of Chapel Hill Street, in Saratoga, Arkansas, where agents allegedly discovered illegal narcotics and firearms. During the search, Agent Garner of the 9th West DTF observed that Austin Hooks had become unresponsive, showing clear signs of an apparent drug overdose. Acting swiftly, Agent Garner administered Narcan and immediately requested emergency medical assistance. His rapid response and training were instrumental in saving Mr. Hooks’ life.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by fentanyl and other illicit drugs, which continue to take lives across our communities. Law enforcement and prosecutors must continue to treat these crimes with the utmost seriousness, not only to bring offenders to justice but to save lives. We extend our sincere gratitude to Agent Garner for his heroic actions, dedication to duty, and commitment to preserving life, even in the most difficult circumstances. While no one wants to go to jail, there are times when intervention, including incarceration, can be a turning point that ultimately saves lives,’ the agencies said in a news release.
