Leadership Nevada County Class of 2025 Celebrates Graduation at Banquet

The Senior Citizens Center in Nevada County was filled with laughter, fellowship, and a sense of accomplishment on December 9th, as Leadership Nevada County hosted its graduation banquet for the Class of 2025 under the theme “Plugged Into Our Future.”
The evening began with Mayor Terry Oliver serving as emcee, warning there would be “dad jokes,” and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Attendees were then welcomed by Ivory Curry, board president, followed by an invocation and blessing of the meal by Howard Austin.
Guests enjoyed a seasonal dinner that organizers and guests proudly claimed featured “the biggest and best dessert table in Nevada County.” Conversation and camaraderie flowed freely as graduates, family, and community leaders celebrated together.
A highlight of the evening was the “A Look Back” slideshow, which captured memorable moments from the program’s events and underscored the friendships and fellowship built throughout the year. Graduation awards were presented to members of the class, and the lighthearted Friendship Award segment—complete with a guessing game about nicknames—brought plenty of smiles and laughter. Graduates also shared reflections during the “What I Learned in Leadership This Year” portion of the program. While responses varied, a common theme emerged: the year was both educational and rewarding. Participants spoke of developing networks, gaining insight into local history, government, and law enforcement, and building lasting relationships.
The Class of 2025 includes Anita Jones, Brian VanHook, Casey Autry, Frank Chavarria, Jamie Simmons, Lee Walker, Sheila Ballard, Shy Hopper, and Sharon Ellis. Together, they expressed a commitment to continue strengthening community ties and applying the leadership principles they learned.
Mayor Oliver closed the evening with a heartfelt challenge to the graduates: “Never settle. Get to know people, build networks, and help others whenever you can.” Sharing his own story of personal growth, Oliver reflected on his early years as a reserved young man who preferred sports and solitude. Encouraged by his father to step out of his comfort zone, Oliver built relationships that helped him achieve both political and financial success. Now in his 15th year as mayor, he reminded the class, “You’re not stuck—there’s a world of opportunities out there.”
The banquet was more than a celebration of achievement; it was a testament to the power of community, connection, and leadership. As the graduates move forward, they carry with them the tools and inspiration to make a lasting impact on Nevada County.
