James Robert Griffin

James Robert Griffin, age 80, of Hope, Arkansas, passed away on February 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

James was born on June 18, 1945, in Hope, Arkansas, to Robert and Edna Rollins Griffin. He graduated from Guernsey High School in 1963 and continued his education at Southern State College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He later earned his master’s degree in mathematics from Ouachita Baptist University.

In December 1968, James married the love of his life, Claudia Morgan. Together they built a beautiful life and were blessed with two daughters, Michelle and Pamela.

James dedicated much of his life to education and public service. He taught at Smackover, Spring Hill High School, Laneburg, UACCH, (now UAHT) and shaped countless young lives through his love of mathematics and steady guidance. Since 2019, he faithfully served his community as a Justice of the Peace.

A devoted servant to his community, James was a longtime member of the Hope Lions Club, where he served as both President and District Governor. He also served as a board member of the Lions of Arkansas Foundation and Mid-South Sight and Hearing. In recognition of his dedicated humanitarian service, he received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

James was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he became a Deacon in 1988. He faithfully taught Sunday School, worked with youth programs, and enjoyed delivering meals to shut-ins. He was also a member of the Gideons. During his college years, he served as a missionary in upstate New York, reflecting his lifelong commitment to faith and service.

He was also a former owner of Tastee Freeze in Hope, where he enjoyed connecting with members of the community.

James loved the outdoors, especially hunting and working outside, mowing his yard and everyone else’s as well. He simply enjoyed being outdoors and staying busy. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family. He loved to teach, loved to serve others, and always worked to guide his children in the right direction. He was known for his patience and caring spirit with his family, his students, and his children’s friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

James is survived by his wife of 57 years, Claudia Griffin; his daughters, Michelle Griffin and Pamela Griffin; his sister, Pat Coleman; his brother, Bill Griffin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Brazzel Oakcrest Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 27, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Hope. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Stephens Cemetery in Stephens, Arkansas.
