Howard Lee Taylor – Updated

Howard Lee Taylor, 93, of Prescott, Arkansas passed away May 1, 2026, at his home. He was born to Flossie and Fred Taylor on March 1, 1933, in Pike County, Arkansas. He grew up in Piney, Arkansas and attended grade school there graduating from Delight High School in 1950. After graduation he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany for two years.

Howard married Clara Jean Calloway on April 22, 1956, in Hollywood, Arkansas and they made their home in Prescott. The family grew to five with the birth of three children: Sherry, Lisa, and Scott. Howard and Jeanie were married for 61 years.

Howard’s faith served a central role in his life. He was baptized at the Antoine Church of Christ in 1951. A dedicated member of the Prescott Church of Christ, he served as a Deacon for 17 years (1974-1991) and later as an Elder for 35 years (1991-present). He was faithful in church attendance and service until the last few years when his health wouldn’t allow him to participate as much as he wanted to. In the last year he was known by many in the church and in town for sharing a daily Bible scripture by text message.

Howard worked in the forestry industry for Hendrix Pulpwood (1956-1970) and Potlatch Corporation (1970-1993).

One of Howard’s proudest accomplishments was serving the City of Prescott as Mayor for 16 years. He was elected in 1994 and served until 2010. During this time, he worked tirelessly to improve the quality of our community by bringing in projects such as the Rural Water System, Sidewalk Projects, and Highway Renovations, and the Overpass which was dedicated to him in 2011. Howard often joked with his family that they wouldn’t need to invest in a tombstone – the overpass would suffice! He was named the Prescott-Nevada County Citizen of the Year in 1997 at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Howard was awarded an Honorary Life membership in the Arkansas Municipal League in 2011.

Howard enjoyed being a member of the Big Buck Deer Camp in Prescott, where he served as president. He was always getting ready for deer season! His grandsons were responsible for helping him make his deer stand accessible and warm with a comfortable chair. He often provided deer meat to the widows in the church as well. He spent a lot of time working in his yard, riding the mower and tending to his flowers. The porch swing provided many hours of enjoyment as he would watch the wildlife in his backyard!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Flossie Taylor (Childers) and Fred Taylor; his beloved wife, Jeanie; a daughter, Lisa-Taylor Crow; a great granddaughter, Blakely Rene Crow; his twin sister Hazel Graham; his brother, Ray Taylor; his sister, Wanda Sue Loe; his stepfather, Earl Childers.

Howard leaves behind a loving family; his sister, Jo Ann McKinnon of Prescott and his brother, Glenn Childers of Prescott; his daughter, Sherry Ward (Ned) of Prescott and his son, Scott Taylor (Beth) of Walpole, Massachusetts.
