Train for in-demand skilled trades at UA Hope-Texarkana to meet Southwest Arkansas workforce needs

HOPE – Skilled trades are the backbone of strong communities, growing industries, and a healthy regional economy. From welding and construction to industrial maintenance, diesel technology, HVAC, and electromechanical systems, skilled workers help keep southwest Arkansas moving.

The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana (UAHT) is helping meet this critical need by offering hands-on technical training that prepares students for high-demand careers and supports the needs of local employers. Potential students still have time to register for fall classes at UAHT and begin building skills that can lead to family-sustaining careers.

Local industries depend on trained workers who can build, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and operate the equipment, systems, and infrastructure that businesses rely on every day. Manufacturing and food processing facilities, construction companies, transportation operations, utility providers, maintenance departments, and small businesses all need employees with practical technical skills.

“Skilled trades are essential to the success of our local economy,” said Jennifer Teresa, UAHT Dean of Technical Programs. “Employers throughout our region need dependable workers who can solve problems, work safely, and keep operations running. UAHT’s technical programs are designed to help students gain those real-world skills and enter the workforce with confidence.”

UAHT offers a variety of technical programs that prepare students for important roles in the regional workforce. Welding students learn skills used in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, transportation, and repair. HVAC students train to install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems used in homes, schools, businesses, and industrial facilities. Diesel technology students prepare for careers that help keep trucks, equipment, and transportation systems operating. Construction technology students gain skills needed in building, maintenance, and infrastructure-related work. Electromechanical technology students learn how electrical and mechanical systems work together in modern industrial settings.

These programs are especially important as employers continue to seek trained workers who can step into technical roles and help reduce downtime, improve productivity, and maintain safe and efficient workplaces. In many cases, skilled trades offer students a direct path to employment, career advancement, and long-term stability.

For students, technical education can be a practical and affordable way to build a better future. Skilled trades provide opportunities for high school students, recent high school graduates, adult learners, career changers, and workers who want to increase their earning potential. These careers often allow individuals to work close to home, support their families, and contribute to the communities where they live.

“When students complete technical training and go to work in our region, everyone benefits,” said Teresa. “Students gain valuable career opportunities, employers gain skilled workers, and our communities become stronger.”

UAHT’s technical programs also play an important role in supporting regional infrastructure. Skilled workers help maintain buildings, equipment, vehicles, utility systems, manufacturing operations, and transportation networks. Without trained welders, HVAC technicians, diesel mechanics, construction workers, maintenance technicians, and electromechanical technicians, many essential services and industries would struggle to operate efficiently.

In addition to technical degree and certificate programs, UAHT supports workforce and economic development by helping students connect their education to real employer needs. The college’s hands-on training model gives students the opportunity to learn by doing, practice industry-relevant skills, and prepare for workplace expectations.

As demand for skilled workers continues, UAHT remains committed to providing training that supports students, families, employers, and the regional economy. For many students, a technical program at UAHT can be the first step toward a meaningful and stable career.

Registration is open now at UA Hope-Texarkana, and potential students still have time to enroll. Students interested in the technical field are encouraged to register for classes today.
