The Cross Roads VFD responded to a woods and pasture fire Thursday (9-3) about 2pm off Hempstead County Road 310. It was not known if there were two separate fires or one had just spread. Areas around the Volentine home that was destroyed by fire Tuesday were burned and an adjacent property containing pine trees also caught fire. A cause was not known. In addition to Cross Roads, the Arkansas Forestry Commission responded with a fire plow to cut the fire off from fresh fuel. The woods fire was difficult to get to as there was only a trail to it. There were no injuries.
Local residents are reminded Hempstead and Nevada County are still under a burn ban. No outside burning is allowed.
