ROSSTON – Nevada proudly posted Southwest Arkansas Educational Cooperative mentor brag of Nevada High mentor Mrs. Taylor Norwood. This is a celebration of mentors who go above and beyond, sharing beyond their building and strengthening mentoring across Southwest Arkansas.
For Roots and Wings stories of the Blue Jay Sonya Ingram Thomas Class of 95 was the focus. Thomas is an example of someone who defied expectations and refused to settle for a poor first test result. Instead, she retook the ACT and became a first-generation college student at SAU. While she earned her Bachelor’s in Sociology, she also worked in order to help her parents out and took remedial classes. She received a master’s from Arkansas Tech and University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Finally, she achieved a PhD in Education Administration from Liberty University.
Thomas is the Director of Career Pathways at UAHT, where she has worked for 19 years. Thomas helps students overcome obstacles that could prevent them from getting an education. She encourages students to take the ACT seriously, take it more than once, lean on family, friends and tutors, apply for scholarships. Thomas wants students not to feel limited by the small towns they may come from.
Miss Moss Kindergarteners learned numbers by playing hopscotch while Mrs. Cole’s third graders leveled up skills with multiples of 3. Elementary students are mastering the Math word of the day: multiples!
Congratulations were given to the Lady Jays Volleyball team on winning the Silver Bracket of the Southwest Classic Junior High Volleyball Tournament at Garret Memorial. Congratulations also to Raelyn Sampson for being named Most Valuable Player!
