HOPE – Sleeping it off in a public place is never a good idea as Shannon Hurt learned the hard way.

According to a release from the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), around 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3, deputies were advised another deputy had made contact with an intoxicated individual, Hurt, sleeping in a 1997 GMC pickup at the Saratoga boat landing.

One of the deputies went to the driver’s side door where Hurt was still asleep with the driver’s side window rolled down. As the deputy neared the truck, Hurt woke up and started the engine. He was ordered to stop the vehicle repeatedly, but ignored the officer and drove away.

According to the report, Hurt drove his truck toward the deputy, who again ordered him to stop and he did. Deputies approached the vehicle, opened the driver’s side door and told Hurt to get out, only to be ignored. The deputies reportedly tried to get control of Hurt’s left wrist, eventually succeeding and pulling him out of the truck. He was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a patrol car.

As the deputies were helping Hurt to his feet, they reportedly noticed his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. They could also allegedly smell the odor of alcohol. Hurt was taken to the Hempstead County Detention Facility where he was booked for driving while under the influence and fleeing.
