Flags retired at PHS

FLAG RETIREMENT 008PRESCOTT – Flag retirement ceremonies were held at Cummings Stadium Friday afternoon.

Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and Boy Scouts were on hand to destroy the flags. Students in grades seven through 12 filled the home stands to witness the ceremony and learn about the flag’s history and how they are properly to be retired. One of the traditional way, and the way shown here, was the red and white stripes were cut into individual strips, with the blue field of stars also removed. Each of the stripes represented one of the original 13 colonies, while the field of blue represented the skies and the stars each of the states.

The Prescott High School band played the national anthem once a flag to be retired was removed from the flag pole and a new one flown. Taps was played at the conclusion of the ceremony.
