New event for NC Fair
PRESCOTT – This year the Nevada County Fair will be celebrating its 80th anniversary with a birthday theme.
The fair is scheduled for Sept. 8-17 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, and, this year, will feature two new events – Taste of Nevada County BBQ contest and the Power Wheels Derby.
The BBQ contest will be held on Sept. 9, but contestants need to be set up by Sept. 8. There will be four categories of competition: chicken, beef, pork and ribs. Side dishes can be brought from home but must be set up by 11 a.m. on the day of the contest. Contestants are responsible for their own set up and presentation.
A panel of three judges will rate the dishes based on appearance, tenderness, flavor and overall presentation. Judging will be done on a 1-10-point basis, with the maximum score from any single judge being 40. The winner of the contest will be the one with the highest single point total and be named the Grand Supreme BBQ Master. There will also be a People’s Choice award which will be used as a tiebreaker in case two scores are identical in the cook off. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.
The public is invited to sample the BBQ after judging has been completed. Judging will be done at noon, with samples expected to be available at 1 p.m.
The deadline to enter is Sept. 4. For more information email JenDickerson1010@gmail.com or text 870-281-5366.
The Power Wheel Derby is another new event for the fair. It will be held at 3 p.m. on Sept. 9 and is for children ages 3-8.
The children must ride in their cars, not on them and all vehicles must remain as they were made by the factory except for decorations and the battery. Batteries must either be factory install or 12v lawnmower batteries. The cars can’t have any sharp edges or dangerous decorations. All contestants must wear helmets.
The entry fee is $3 per event of all four events for $10. The events include: drag racing, figure 8, lap races and a demolition derby. The rules for the demolition derby are simple. Water balloons will be taped to the front and rear of all vehicles. The goal is to be the last contestant with an unbroken water balloon. All collisions must be at the front or rear of the vehicles and not at the sides.
The talent show isn’t a new event, but it is popular. This year’s talent show will be Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Potlatch Building. The categories remain the same: vocal solo, vocal group, instrumental solo, dance solo, dance group and variety.
All acts will be judged on talent, preparedness, appearance and entertainment value. Awards will be presented to the winner of each category. The show is also broken down by age group. The age groups are: 4-9; 10-15; and 16-21.
Contestants must not have ever been convicted of a crime or have criminal charges pending. Entry forms must be filled out by the contestants and their parent/guardians. Forms can be found at www.facebook.com/NevadaCountyFairPrescott or at the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce.
The fair pageants will again be held on two nights, with the infant-petite groups taking center stage at 6 p.m. on Sept. 14 in the Potlatch Building. The Young-Queen divisions will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 16.
The age divisions are as follows: infant – 0-11 months; baby – 12-23 months; tiny – 2-3 years; little – 4-6 years; petite – 7-9; young – 10-12; junior – 13-16; and queen – 17-21.

The contest will also be broken down into age groups: 4 and under; 5-8; 9-13; and 14-19. All animals must meet state regulations in order to enter the fairgrounds.
