MELONFEST 002HOPE – Hope’s 41st Annual Watermelon Festival kicked off with the annual Kiwanis BBQ chicken dinner.

The dinner was held at the community center, with club members manning grills, barbecuing the chicken to a perfect golden brown. The chicken was so tender it literally fell off the bone. Diners,  those dined in, got carryout or drive through, had no complaints. The meal consisted of a leg quarter, beans, bread and slaw. Those dining in also enjoyed cold drinks, punch or tea, with their meal.

Two tables were set up for those who dined in, with another set of tables for the harried crew working to keep up with the drive through and carryout crowd. The drive through started off slowly, but by 5:30 p.m. runners were having trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic. Of course, some using drive through were getting as many as five dinners at a time.
