Veterans Services in Hempstead County
HOPE- There are roughly 250,000 Veterans in the state of Arkansas, 1600 of which are located in Hempstead County region. Leon Prince a Veteran who served 21 years in the Marine Corp and later served during the Desert Storm in 1990 is the Veterans Officer for Hempstead County. His office is located on the first floor of the Hempstead County Courthouse at 400 South Washington Street in Hope. He is available to assist Veterans on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am until 4pm and the from 8am until 12pm on Fridays.
The services that are provided at the Hempstead County location are to help the Veterans directly, by having county offices it allows them to have more of a personal connection compared to what it would be a state or federal level. Assistance to veterans include helping them file claims and helping them review letters that are sent from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs(VA) along with informing that veterans what they could be eligible for from the VA such as life insurance, and basic health care such as visits to the VA clinics and hospitals a basic copay may be required if glasses or hearing aids are needed. All of the services that are provided by Mr. Prince are free to the Veterans, not only does he assist the veterans but also their families. Other services that are provided to the Hempstead County Veterans is the DAV, the van is driven by volunteers to carry the veterans to their appoints on Mondays and Wednesdays, there are usually four passengers a day that ride.
The Hempstead County office is trying to get accredited by the state to get access on the computer to better assist the veterans with their claims and helping keep their files. Mr. Prince stated that he gets satisfaction when he helps a veteran or their family get the things that they need and that it is what makes him want to come go to work everyday.
