Wolves open season with win over Hampton

2017 WOLVES 002

MAGNOLIA – Prescott’s Curley Wolves opened the 2017 football season with a convincing 30-6 win over the Hampton Bulldogs.

The game was unusual in that it was played on Tuesday night, but the two squads had the chance to kick off their grid campaigns in the Southern Arkansas University Mulerider Classic.

Prescott Head Coach Tommy Poole said every win is a good win and the Wolves came out fast, getting off to a good start. He added the game did get sloppy in some areas, but this was expected as it was the first game of the year.

“There’s room for improvement on both sides of the ball,” Poole said. “But we had good effort and the desire is there. If you have that everything else will fall into place.”

The ‘Dogs, he said, were a scrappy team, one that played for a state title last year and returned several starters on both sides of the ball. He said the ‘Dogs could run and had size. However, it wasn’t enough to derail the Wolves.

“This was a good test for the rest of the season. They did a lot of things on both sides of the ball and we had to play assignment football. We looked better (than the scrimmage against Ashdown), more comfortable and we should improve. If we do, we have a chance for a good season.

“I like being able to ‘climb the hill’ to get to the peak,” he continued, “and reach the playoffs.”

Prescott has won its last 16 consecutive games. The Wolves will be at home Friday night, Sept. 8 when the team hosts Camden Harmony Grove. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
