Maya Angelou Art Winners

Students at Clinton Primary School recently participated in the Celebrate Maya Project, which honors the life and work of author, artist, and Arkansan Maya Angelou. Artworks representing different phases of Angelou’s life were produced by the students and judged through the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council in conjunction with the William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace National Historic Site. Overall winner was Osualdo Brito’s rendition of the title to the Angelou classic “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”Second place went to Miguel Solis, third place to Brianna MacLaughlin, and honorable mentions were awarded to Taniya Willis and Emir Barrentos. SWAAC Executive Director George Smith presented the winners along with Celebrate Maya Project Founder Janis F. Kearney. The National Park Service was represented by Ranger Mark Spearman. – Ken McLemore/Hope Public Schools
