Photo winners named

PRESCOTT – Winners were named in the photo contest sponsored by the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office and Southwest Arkansas Planning and Development District (SWAPDD).

The winners were given a certificate and gift card to Prescott Flowers. The photos will be on display at the EDO, and will be used by both the EDO and SWAPDD for marketing purposes. There were five categories in the contest: Nevada County’s Natural Treasures; the Beautiful Roads and Structures of Nevada County; Nevada County at Work and Play; Faith in Nevada County; and Nevada County Strong for those photos not fitting the other categories criteria.

Judging was done by the Southern Arkansas University Advanced Digital Photography students, who narrowed the selections down to the top five. Overall, 54 entries were made in the contest.

Amanda Kisselburg won the Nevada County Strong division with her photo “Longhorn”. She said the longhorn cattle represents one of the largest industries in Nevada County – the cattle industry, and got involved because of her father.

Nancy Bailey’s entry “Moscow Church” took the top spot in the Faith category. Bailey, started working with film photography, but was forced into going digital and computer editing. Her father is a carpenter and son an architect, but she enjoys taking pictures of old churches. She said she takes pictures to preserve history because it’s important.

Kisselburg also took first place with her photo “Brothers” which captured a sweet moment between her sons at sunset.

Claudette Harris’ entry “Country Roads” shows one of the back roads of Nevada County. Harris was unable to attend the awards event Thursday due to health reasons. Harris’ entry also won “Best of Show” for the contest.

Judy Duke took first place in the Natural Treasure’s division with her photo called “Spiderweb”. She took the shot early one morning when she was out in her yard. She said the web caught her eye as it was covered in dew in a crepe myrtle bush.

Godwin said all entries are appreciated and will be used to promote Prescott and Nevada County. The photos will also be on the EDO’s Facebook page and will also be used by the SWAPDD in marketing Southwest Arkansas.
