BSB holds special meeting for personnel and buses

BLEVINS – The Blevins School Board held a special session Thursday night at 6:30 pm in the Administration Building.
The primary reason for the special session was a matter of staff personnel. There was a new hire that required the school board’s approval before Monday, thus necessitating the urgent meeting. The hire was approved, and the board proceeded to use the opportunity to address a few other matters.
Most notably, the board finally came to a decision on a matter that they’d been discussing for months; purchasing a school bus. Dismissing the leasing option off the bat, the board weighed their options between buying new or used. While a good $8,000 more expensive, a new bus would come with a warranty, providing needed parts and repairs. No such warranty was available for a used bus, regardless of quality. The board addressed once again that, while safe, some of the district’s buses have significant wear and tear, largely attributed to the rough back roads the buses travel daily. They also noted that once basketball season starts up, all buses in the fleet will be in use. As things stand, if a bus were to break down, there would be no way to pick up the stranded kids until another bus finished its route. The board found his unacceptable and moved to purchase a new bus, deciding that the price of the new bus was worth the warranty. The motion was accepted unanimously.
The board also agreed to move the date of the September meeting to the 23rd. This adjustment was made in order to review the finished payroll after the first round of payments are issued. The August and October meetings will proceed as scheduled: on the second Monday of the month.
