4014 Big Boy Locomotive Makes Stop in Hope

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s Completion, the Union Pacific Railroad historic Big Boy Steam locomotive 4014 returned to commemorate. The 4014 is the only operating Big Boy locomotive in the world.

Big Boy 4014 was one of twenty-five that were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad. It has currently traveled through Texas and made a stop in Hope, Arkansas on Tuesday, November 12 on what the Union Pacific is calling the “Great Race Across the Southwest.” The locomotive will continue through Arkansas and on into Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, and Wyoming.

The 132 foot long; 1.2 million pound locomotive was a big hit in the small town of Hope. Young and old gathered at the Hope Train Station for this once in a lifetime experience. Seeing steam from a mile away, you could hear the excitement in the kids voices as it entered the station. With bells and whistles sounding, the train came to a stop and people couldn’t wait to gaze upon it. As the train left the station, on its way to Prescott for the night, black smoke rolled as the engine picked up speed.

*The train will depart from the Prescott Train Station at 9:00am; on Wednesday, November 13.*
