The Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church on Hickory Street in Hope was the scene of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day celebration Monday. The service was filled with wonderful music, heartfelt words, and a grand tribute to the late Civil Rights leader. The program was called to order by Lindia Box, a member of Mt. Zion followed by a congregational version of the “Negro National Anthem”. Ruby Phillips offered a welcome to all followed by a prayer from Rev. Jessie Henry. Pastor Frankie B. Mitchell of Haynes Chapel offered scripture followed by the first of several songs by a community choir. Bro. Trent Charles shared Dr. King’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech followed by the offering collected by several young people. Host Pastor Rev. Catrina Ward spoke briefly highlighting several of Dr. King’s memorable sermons and speeches. Rev. Jessie Henry led the “invitation to Christian Discipleship” and Mrs. Hazel Simpson offered brief remarks thanking all who worked on the program. An unscheduled but welcome musical number was delivered by Rev. James Lister with a moving version of “Precious Lord Take My Hand”. Following a congregational rendition of “We Shall Overcome”, Rev. Lister offered the benediction to close the service. Those attending thoroughly enjoyed the tribute to Dr. King and his work.
