Meeks makes history

PRESCOTT – History was made 24 years ago when Susie Meeks was elected to the Prescott City Council.

She was the first African American woman to be elected to the position of alderman in Prescott. This occurred on May 19, 1998.

Prior to being elected, she served briefly after her husband, Leo, had to step down due to medical reasons. Howard Taylor, mayor at the time, appointed her to fill his term. In ’98, she became a candidate, running for Ward 4, Position 2, where she has served since, though it’s now W4P1.
