ROSSTON – Twenty-three seniors walked into the Nevada gym Thursday night, with 23 graduates walking out.

The stands were packed with family, friends and well-wishers, all on hand to see the Class of 2022 be awarded their diploma and take the next step of their young lives. Tonda Pennington, NSD principal, welcomed everyone, telling the seniors this night was for them.

Karsyn Taylor provided the Honors Address. “We made it,” she said, “and are taking the next step in our lives thanks to the teachers pushing us along the way. We were blessed to grow up in a small school. Taylor said this group will do its best as it’s had the best preparation.

Ethan Burns gave the teacher appreciation, saying teachers are the backbone of society and he’s grateful to all of them because if not for them the graduates wouldn’t be ready for their next step.

Karsen Moss stepped up to give the parent address, thanking the parents for the love, support, guidance and sacrifice they’ve provide over the years, adding “we wouldn’t be here without you. You helped us with our homework, got us to and from extracurricular activities, cheered us on and made extra trips for those things we forgot.”

The class farewell was given by Jada Grant, who said this was a sad occasion, because everyone will be leaving, but it’s also exciting because of all the possibilities before them. “Since we were young, we’ve been asked what we want to be and who we are,” she said. “We had to think about it. But now is the time for us to celebrate where we are with no regrets and take care of ourselves.

Superintendent Roy McCoy gave the administrative address, thanking the Blue Jay Nation for its support, saying all students are special at Nevada. He said this is another chapter in the Blue Jay Nation, and it’s their turn to sing.

From there came the moment everyone waited for – the awarding of diplomas.
