Hope Connexion Grow Boxes Grant

On Friday there was an official presentation ceremony of a grant to The Hope ConneXion Outreach center of a grant of $5000 from the American Electric Power Corporation Foundation presented by Jennifer Harland, External Affairs Manager and Amanda Keeney, Director of Communications who reported on it. Assistant Director Jennifer Martinez and Board Member Terry Smith were here to recognize the grant.  Martinez said that this grant will allow Hope ConneXion to double the food produced and increase access to the food.  Hope ConneXion provides1000lbs a week in the Blessing boxes.
Martinez was asked about the mission of Hope ConneXion and explained the history and vision.  Pastors Adam and Amy started with the jailhouse ministry and it grew from there as other needs were identified. One of these needs was fresh food and Martinez who has been involved with Hope ConneXion since August ended up running the Blessin’ Garden project. Martinez has enjoyed gardening for a few years and is a Hempstead County Master Gardener.  Hope ConneXion also has planted fruit trees and will be planting blueberry bushes.
Martinez gave a tour of the building and gave a glimpse into the future vision for the center – a Safe Place, a recreation area, and a kitchen to feed the public. Hope ConneXion also provides showers, a place to do laundry, a clothing closet, computer access and help with addiction and counseling.  Programs include financial literacy, self-defense classes and there is a job board for those seeking employment opportunities.  Hope ConneXion has also helped clients get IDs using their Learning Center lab. Computers are available for use by people who need to write resumes, take GED classes or other online schooling, perform job searches, or print off documents.
The center relies on volunteers and donations.  People from many different places volunteer. On any given day one might see volunteers from the bank, the Cub Scouts, local schools, or the sheriff’s department as well as those who receive the services. Donations can be received through CashApp, Facebook, and the website.
