District not forcing bibles on students

PRESCOTT – A group called Freedom from Religion is asking the Prescott School District, basically, to stop handing out bibles and having prayers at school.

However, according to Robert Poole, superintendent of the PSD, the district neither purchased the bibles nor handed them out. The bibles were donated by another group and students could take one or not as they chose. He did say the district teaches a class on history of the bible, which is an approved course by the state.

As to prayer, Poole said that, too, was student’s choice at meal time and they weren’t made to do it. The law requires, he added, districts allow a moment of silence each morning during which students can pray or not as they see fit.
