Mattie Lee Hogan Flowers

Ms. Mattie Lee Hogan Flowers, affectionately known as “Black Mac,” was a beloved resident of Hope, Arkansas. She was born on April 28, 1933, in Bradley, Arkansas, to Henry and Gussie Lee Wise Hogan. Ms. Flowers developed a deep love for Christ at a young age and worshipped at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bradley.

During her youth, Ms. Flowers attended the local segregated school in Bradley called Bumpham. Like many children of her time, she left school early to help work on the land. Regardless of the task, she always demonstrated excellence and instilled the value of hard work in her children.

Ms. Flowers was married to her childhood sweetheart, Charlie Flowers, and together they had ten children. In the 1990s, she relocated to Hope, Arkansas. She initially joined Washington Temple COGIC but later attended Pentecostal Temple COGIC with her daughter, Curlie B., as her health began to decline.

Known for her generosity and love for children, Ms. Flowers had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and all children. She earned the nickname “Kool Cup Lady” because she always had frozen Kool-Aid treats for everyone. She also enjoyed baking pies for her family and friends. Fishing was one of her favorite pastimes, bringing her joy and relaxation.

Ms. Mattie Lee Hogan Flowers will be remembered for her unwavering faith, hard work, love for her family, and her kind and giving nature. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Ms. Mattie was preceded in death by her aforementioned parents; two sons: Charlie Flowers, Jr. and Harvey Lee Flowers; sisters: Prezine Smith and Maxine Haynes and a brother-in-law, AJ Johnson. Her legacy will live on through her five sons: Danny L. Flowers of Fulton, Arkansas, Curtis J. Flowers, Eddie L. Flowers (Mary), Henry L. Flowers (Wanda Kay) all of Hope, Russell L. Flowers of Texarkana, Arkansas; three daughters: Lessie B. Flowers of Bradley, Curlie B. Flowers and Lessie Mae Flowers (Mark) both of Bradley; a sister, Ruby Johnson of Texarkana, Arkansas; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. 

Her Homegoing Celebration Service will be held at 2:00 P. M., on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Rising Star Baptist Church in Hope. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 P. M., at Brandon’s Mortuary in Hope. Her earthly body will be laid to rest at St. Mary Cemetery in Bradley.
