Scouts visit Holcim plant

PRESCOTT – Scout Troop 5 of Hope were guests of the Holcim plant in Prescott on Saturday, May 18th to learn about conservation and the environment. Justin Smith of Holcim coordinated the activities which included tree identification and their biology. This was taught by Robert Wright, a professional forester with Deltic Timber. Bird identification and information about what birds we have in this area was taught by Cameron Tatom, a biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
The Scouts planted trees and put up new bird houses in the park next to the plant. Holcim sponsored the building of the bird houses. The Scouts assembled them under the direction of Assistant Scoutmaster Ed Flagg. The Scouts took it a step further and painted each house with it’s own unique design. Assistant Scoutmaster Donnie Golden was also in charge of the building and erecting of the bird houses at the Holcim site. There was quite a variety of trees, plants and birds for the group to see and learn about.
Also participating was a large group of Holcim families and friends. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a good time.
Holcim fed the group and all the guests with 30 large pizzas.
Troop 5 Scouts participating were: D’Aunna Golden, Senior Patrol Leader; Emma Wright, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster; Mary Martinez, Dakota Greer, Makenzi Golden, Penelope Tucker, Lucas Matchett, Harper McMahan, Riley Golden, Andrew Golden, Robert and Betty Wright, Amanda Greer, Brian Matchett, Amanda and Charlotte Tucker , Ed Flagg, Donnie Golden, Scoutmasters Karen Smith and Dr. Lester Sitzes.
