Nevada County Quorum Court

The Nevada County Quorum Court met in the Nevada County Courthouse on Tuesday (9-10). The meeting began with the prayer and pledge, followed by the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting
There was a Committee Report from the Economic Development Organization. The activities of the fair were spoken about with encouragement of people attending. This year’s carnival is said to be by far the best. Wednesday will have the animal shows during the day and the carnival will begin that night.
A broadband meeting held in Hope was discussed. A grant cycle for the ISPs will begin this month. Nevada County is believed to be in a good situation as these grand opportunities open. Options were discussed and it was noted there is another option if fiber can’t be brought to an area. Apparently, Arkansas has plenty of money for broadband.
For new business there was an appropriation ordinance for $401,960.64 received from Union Pacific for the train derailment in Emmet. This was approved to cover the costs of the transportation of solid waste from the derailment and road and bridge repairs. The ordinance passed.
It was noted Wildcat Road is open and the landfill road is being worked on.
The landfill agreement expires next month. The state requires a certain amount of money to be set aside for it. A motion to approve the financial assurance passed.
The county has searched records were searched and no record of county roads bring closed was found except for one road during the period from 2007 to 2024.
The statement was made that the county judge has the power to close a road and doesn’t have to go through the quorum court. The individual who spoke during the last month’s meeting disagreed stating it required 10 people and if it was on a bus route or thére was a mailbox it couldn’t be closed. Farm Bureau won’t loan money on the property in question because there is no legal access to the property. The property can be accessed only by County Roads 148 and 149. On only one of these roads can delivery drivers get there. The j.p.’s decided on three individuals going with the county judge to visit the property.
Last month’s ordinance which was challenged has been tabled until it is examined by lawyer.
