Bobby T Fulks of Prescott and a 26-year Army Veteran, won 4 medals and one ribbon participating in last week’s National Veterans Golden Age
Games in Memphis Tennessee. Competing against other visually impaired veterans Fulks had an impressive first year outing in the Games. Fulks won Gold in bowling; Gold in free throw shooting; Silver in air rifles; Bronze in horseshoes and a 4th Place Ribbon in corn hole toss.
Inspired by programs that promote healthy aging, fitness and recreation, VA initiated the National Veterans Golden Age Games in 1985 to underscore the preventive and therapeutic value of sports medicine for older Veterans who receive health care at VA facilities. The mission was clear—encourage physical activity through competitive sports for positive outcomes and better health and wellness.
Today, the National Veterans Golden Age Games is 39 years strong and the only multi-sport competition in the world designed to improve the quality of life for all older Veterans, including those with a wide range of abilities. VA hosts the event in a new city each year as Veterans look forward to a reunion with their community of brothers and sisters, just as they did in military service.
This year’s Games had competitors in all categories, ambulatory, non-ambulatory, and visually impaired and totaled over 1,000 who competed!
After his graduation for Prescott High School where he excelled in sports, Fulks made a career of the Army serving from 1985 till May of 2012.
William (Bill) Taylor, formerly of Prescott competed in the Games also and contributed to this news item.
