A Life of Service, Curiosity, and Community: Honoring Mike Wright of Washington, AR

Mike Wright, 79, of Washington, Arkansas, is a man whose life reflects a deep commitment to service, learning, and community. As he and his wife Jackie prepare to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on December 21, 2025, their shared journey stands as a powerful example of love, resilience, and purpose. Mike’s story begins with a call to serve.
Though drafted into the U.S. Army, he volunteered for the 187th Airborne, serving as a combat engineer and rising to the role of NCOIC (non-commissioned officer in charge). His deployment to Vietnam was a source of deep concern for his mother, who, having witnessed the toll of war on her husband during World War II, struggled with the thought of her son facing similar dangers. Out of respect for her, Mike kept many of his wartime experiences to himself. Among the most poignant memories he does share is the bond he formed with a Lieutenant Colonel whose life he once saved. That act of courage forged a lasting friendship. The Colonel, a Jewish man who identified as an atheist yet faithfully observed Jewish traditions, left a lasting impression on Mike—highlighting the complexity of belief and the strength of human connection.
After his military service, Mike pursued his academic interests, studying geology at Arkansas Tech University and graduating from the University of Arkansas. He went on to teach mathematics for 30 years at what is now Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas where he inspired countless students. His philosophy on education is simple yet profound: “Knowledge is valuable to those who have it when they share it with others for free.”
Mike and Jackie have lived in Washington, AR, for the past five years, where they’ve become deeply involved in the local community. Both are certified master gardeners, generously volunteering their time to beautify and nurture their surroundings. Mike is also a proud member of the American Legion in DeQueen, continuing his lifelong dedication to service.
One of Mike’s greatest passions is his involvement with Historic Washington State Park. He and Jackie are active participants in the park’s community events and historical reenactments, helping bring Arkansas’s rich heritage to life. Whether portraying a character from the past or supporting educational programs, Mike’s enthusiasm and authenticity make history feel alive and relevant to all who visit. In addition to his community work, Mike is a skilled woodworker who once crafted Adirondack chairs to earn extra income. He’s also an avid stamp collector, with an entire room in his home dedicated to his collection. Each stamp tells a story—like his prized circa 1850s Serbian stamp—offering a glimpse into the past and a reflection of his lifelong curiosity.
Mike Wright’s life is a mosaic of dedication—to his country, his family, his students, and his community. His story reminds us that true wisdom lies not just in what we know, but in how generously we share it.
