Mrs. Hazel Mae Booker Simpson was born on July 5, 1941, the cherished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Booker.
She was one of twelve children. She was preceded in death by her siblings Mable Braggs, Maxine Macon,
Thelma Hopson, Ruthie Morran, Dorothy Bazziel, Juniata Mitchille, Felton Booker, and Billie Booker.
She is lovingly survived by her sister Gwendolyn Booker and her brothers Robert Booker and Ted Booker.
Hazel was the devoted mother of DeMarco Williams (Cynthia Williams) and Bonita Office (Ken Office).
She was preceded in death by her son DeMarco. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Bonita Office, grandchildren: Donte Robinson, DeMarcus Williams, Timique Crayton, and DeMarsha Williams, along with five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends.
A proud 1959 graduate of Henry Clay Yerger High School, Hazel was recognized among the Top 10 of her class.
She was a gifted athlete, active in track, volleyball, and softball, and also served on the student council.
After graduation, she pursued her passion for barbering, receiving her accreditation in Tyler, Texas.
She went on to make history as the first female barber in the city of Hope, Arkansas, faithfully serving her community for more than 40 years.
Hazel had many achievements, among the one she was most proud was the founding of the Henry Clay Yerger High School Museum.
She was instrumental in securing its initial funding by working with Representative Sandra Rodgers, leading a delegation to Governor Mike Beebe, and gaining further support from her sister-in-law, Senator Linda Chesterfield. Thanks to her persistence and vision, the history of her beloved alma mater is preserved for generations to come.
Everyone knew Hazel. She was far more than a barber—she was a voice, a leader, and a servant of her community.
She was an active member of the NAACP and both the local and state Democratic Party. She dedicated herself to campaigns for leaders such as Bill Clinton, Mike Ross, and Mike Beebe, and was a familiar presence at Hope School Board, City Board, and Quorum Court meetings, always standing for fairness and progress.
Her presence was especially felt at Northside Park, where she served faithfully as Secretary and Treasurer. Hazel was the steady hand behind the scenes, managing finances, keeping records, and making sure everything ran smoothly. She also ran the concession stand, where her warm smile and kind words were as nourishing as the treats she served. To many, Hazel was the heart of the park — her commitment and love made it a welcoming place for children, families, and neighbors alike.
Guided by a heart of compassion and a deep faith in God, Hazel lived her life in service to others. A lifelong and faithful member of Haynes Chapel Baptist Church, she poured her spirit into every role she held. She was a beloved Sunday School teacher, bringing scripture to life for both children and adults. She served on the Usher Board, welcoming all with grace, and she faithfully delivered church announcements, making sure the congregation stayed informed and connected. As a member of the Youth Board, she helped guide countless young people in both faith and purpose.
Hazel’s devotion to youth extended far beyond the church. She was a longtime Girl Scout Leader, where her mentorship shaped generations of young girls into women of confidence, compassion, and strength. Her kindness, leadership, and tireless energy left a lasting imprint on every child who was blessed to know her.
Above all else, Hazel loved her family, her friends, her community, and especially the youth. She gave selflessly of herself to uplift, encourage, and support others. Her nurturing spirit, generous heart, and unwavering dedication touched the lives of everyone she met.
Mrs. Hazel Mae Booker Simpson’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her legacy an enduring light. Though she will be deeply missed, her faith, her service, and her boundless kindness will continue to shine through all those who were inspired by her. Her life is a testament to love, to service, and to the power of one woman’s unwavering faith.
