Former Hempstead County resident and Hope High graduate Ben Downs has been notified he will become the 6th recipient of the Texas Association of Broadcasters Lifetime Achievement Award this August. Downs is the Vice-President and General Manager of Bryan Broadcasting in Bryan, Texas. Downs learned of the honor this past Wednesday (5-13) during a Zoom call from TAB President Oscar Rodriguez during a zoom call during a Bryan Broadcasting staff meeting.
Downs is the son of the late Earl and June Downs. He attended Hope Public Schools and graduated in the early 1970’s. He began his broadcast career in 1968 at KXAR-AM in Hope. Downs was a popular announcer during his years at KXAR. He attended Texas A & M after graduation in Hope and has worked in broadcasting in Texas since the 1970’s. During his days at KXAR, he worked alongside another Hope High student who went on to bigger things than KXAR, Governor, and now Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee.
Our congratulations go to Ben Downs on this latest honor!
