HOPE, Ark. — The Hope Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday, May 19th, recognized student achievements, discussed facility improvements, and approved personnel matters during its regular monthly meeting. Board President Alvis Hamilton called the meeting to order, and members approved minutes from the previous session before hearing reports from administrators and staff.
Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Crossley introduced Chelsea Ewing and a group of Yerger Middle School students who recently qualified for the national FBLA leadership competition. The Hope district serves prekindergarten through 12th grade in Hempstead County and emphasizes career readiness and student leadership opportunities. Teacher Chelsea Ewing introduced members of the Yerger Middle School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America, noting that the group earned five gold and two silver medals in the state competition. Of the 207 students from Arkansas who qualified for the national competition, which will be held at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, from June 29 to July 2, 2026, the Yerger group was the only middle school delegation. The national event brings together top students from across the country to compete in leadership and business-related contests and to participate in workshops and recognition ceremonies. Ewing said the students’ focus has been “how to be professional and believe in yourself,” adding that their success reflects their commitment beyond the classroom. “They have dedicated personal time outside school hours,” she said, crediting the students for their achievements. The group thanked the community for its continued support during their presentation.
In other recognitions, district officials highlighted student speech and writing achievements through the “Flashlight Learning” program, while Calla Vonn was named among the nation’s top 100 educators. Kimberly Dunham and other staff members were also recognized for their contributions to student growth and development.
The board also discussed facility needs across the district, particularly sound system equipment. Members agreed that upgrades are needed throughout the district, but approved a bid specifically for lighting improvements at Yerger Middle School. Officials said broader improvements would require a coordinated, in-house approach for long-term effectiveness.
Board members approved the required annual resolution to maintain the superintendent as the district’s representative to its regional education cooperative. The board held a brief discussion of the Edith Brown building, described as unused/underutilized. A nonprofit organization offering adult education, literacy, and recovery programs has expressed interest in the property. No action was taken, but a determination of action in the near future was confirmed.
In personnel matters, the board approved a modest pay increase for secretarial staff while delaying action on additional wage and duty adjustments pending further review. Classified staff contracts were approved with modifications.
Administrators reported that summer school staffing is largely complete, with only limited vacancies remaining following recent last-minute retirements. A special-called meeting is expected next week to address summer school operations, potential action on the Edith Brown property, and additional hiring and possible pay increase decisions. The meeting was adjourned.
