On Monday, May 25th, veterans and townsfolk alike gathered together at the former Hope Courthouse to remember and recognize the servicemen and women who gave their all for our country. Speaking for the service was longtime Sheriff James Singleton, a veteran and law enforcement officer of 48 years. During his speech, his message included, “The freedom of today was secured by heroes we probably have never met” and “May we always remember to honor the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice”. The weather that morning turned out perfectly as the skies were clear and blue and a warm summerlike temperature filled the air.
Before the service, we asked County Judge and Vietnam War veteran Jerry Crane what Memorial Day means to him:
“Well, it means a lot to me because I am a combat veteran. I would never miss because I’m going to come to remember those who gave their lives for our country. We want people to realize that freedom isn’t free. People shed their blood for us, so that’s why I think it’s important for us to come together as a community. I know on a day like this, people are enjoying it, they’re enjoying their freedom, but I believe that we should take time out of today to remember what that freedom cost.
