The Hope Lions heard a program on Monday (8-3) from Scott Gunter on his 35-year career in the railroad industry. Gunter is a 1971 graduate of Hope High. After high school he went to college in Fayetteville and later law school. After getting his education, he went to work for Southern Pacific. He was a claims representative and investigated grade crossing accidents, employee injuries, cattle claims, and fire claims. His initial territory was Brinkley, Arkansas to East St. Louis, Illinois. He explained he took measurements and photographs. One of the most important jobs he had was to find witnesses to incidents. He recounted a humorous account of a witness to an accident. He asked the witness if the train whistle blew and he said it did. When Gunter asked how it sounded, the witness gave a rather loud “Whooo…Whooo”! Gunter said the witness also gave his version in court, much to the surprise of the judge! The Lions greatly enjoyed Gunter’s program and had several questions about railroads in general following the program.
