HOPE — The NAACP 6012B Hope-Hempstead County Branch held its August 11 general body meeting with a focus on strengthening membership and expanding civic engagement.
Branch leadership welcomed students, educators, and families preparing for the 2026–27 school year and emphasized the importance of continued community involvement.
A renewed membership outreach effort was launched targeting members whose memberships expired in 2026. The branch reported 47 current members, below the 50-compliance threshold. New membership for Linda Jackson Dixon from the Nevada County Juneteenth will be processed.
Members were encouraged to personally reconnect with individuals in their networks and serve as trusted messengers to help renew memberships and strengthen the organization.
Local government and community development anchored recent discussions as the branch reviewed upcoming municipal elections featuring four Board of Directors positions—two of which are contested—and learned that the Hempstead County Quorum Court unanimously approved a November 3rd ballot measure to issue up to $13.5 million in bonds for Southwest Arkansas Regional Medical Center improvements, secured by a voter-approved sales tax from May.
The branch also noted an upcoming public hearing hosted by the Hope Board on August 18 at 7 p.m. concerning a proposed $521,000 municipal waste disposal revenue bond intended to finance improvements to the city’s waste collection and disposal system.
Members emphasized the importance of knowing candidates and issues and encouraging civic participation in local elections.
The branch additionally received an update regarding parks and recreation initiatives, including proposed playground improvements at the soccer field and continued work surrounding Dr. Roscoe Smith Park. Members discussed opportunities for community involvement and improved event access by establishing a “Friends of” community organization to support local parks and recreation.
During the finance report, Magigor Love, Treasurer, reported the current balance is $1,007.45. The transition to Huntington Bank caused issues with receiving paperwork and added a fee for printed bank statements. The Treasurer plans to ask bank officials to waive this fee. The finance committee will meet to finalize the presentation of the Branch’s first budget.
The meeting adjourned with new business items for the September meeting, including delegates for the NAACP Arkansas State Conference 81st State Convention and the 2026 Branch Elections Timeline.
