Project updates dominate Hope City Board meeting

HOPE – Business before the Hope City Board Tuesday night for their first October meeting consisted of updates on current projects.

Severen Girod, Project Manager with Ideal Construction, was present and discussed the status of the City of Hope Recreation/Aquatic Center Project. He walked the board through the steps for the construction of the foundation and showed photos of the progress. (One of the photos accompanies this article.)

As progress continues on preliminary work in the building of a new Hope Fire Department station, several artist renderings were looked at by board members for color choices for the roof and doors. A final decision is expected in the next few meetings.

Board members looked at Splash Pad Sidewalk Renderings. Part of what was looked at was a design that contained a featured area for the replacement of the historic sign. Cost estimate is approximately $12 a square foot. There is also some minor concrete damage repair that needs to occur at the perimeter of the playground while crews are on site.

Two zoning requests were tabled to the next meeting due to only four city board members being present. Mayor Don Still, Mark Ross, and Reginald Easter were absent.

In board member remarks, Gary Johnson pointed out two letters were missing from the Hope Fire Department firehouse and urged, for the sake of appearances, the letters be replaced. Johnson also inquired about who owned the old Stephens Grocer Company warehouse. He said through the building is being used, it’s exterior presents a rusting and derelict look, especially in downtown and near the courthouse. He said if the owner has been told, “We can do better than that.”
