Dragons chilled 52-13

GENOA – Prescott managed to get to the mercy rule Friday night, but it really didn’t matter as the threshold wasn’t crossed until the end of the game – literally with a 52-13 win.
Genoa Central gave Prescott all the Wolves could handle, primarily using a ball-control offense to keep Prescott’s potent offense on the sidelines. Through the first three quarters of the game, most of the Dragon’s running plays resembled a rugby scum more than anything else as the hosts relied on a large offensive line to wear down the smaller Wolf defenders. However, though the Dragons were able to move the ball, they found getting into the end zone difficult.
Both teams battled a strong wind, which played havoc with the passing and kicking games.
Prescott moves to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. The Wolves will be at home Friday, Oct. 22 as the team hosts the Bismarck Lions for Homecoming. Homecoming festivities will begin with a parade Tuesday at 5:30 with the route going from City Park to Central Baptist Church. A pep rally will be held at Cummings Field at 2 p.m. Friday where the homecoming royalty will be introduced.
The Wolves scored the first three times the team had the ball. The first touchdown came on a two-play 68-yard drive with Jaylen Hopson scoring on a 53-yard scamper. The two-point conversion made it 8-0 with 7:23 left in the opening frame.
Prescott only needed one play to score on its next possession, this time Carston Poole found Omarion Dickens with a 52-yard scoring strike. The point after made it 15-0 with 4:53 showing.
That ended scoring in the first quarter as the Dragons, though moving the ball, couldn’t do much of anything with it.
Prescott’s first possession in the second quarter required six plays with Hopson scoring on a 21-yard run with 7:59 left in the half. The PAT was good, making it 22-0.
The ensuing pooch kick was recovered by Prescott after being bobbled by a Dragon. The turnover proved to be irrelevant at Poole was picked off at the Genoa 11 on the next play.
It was three and out for the hosts, with a wind-driven punt making it to the Prescott 30.
Genoa’s defense stiffened, pushing the Wolves back and sacking Poole on third down to force Prescott to punt into the wind. The snap was bobbled and punt attempt block with the Dragons recovering it at the Prescott 14.
Genoa scored its first touchdown on the next play, a 14-yard run. Prescott was flagged for being offside on the PAT with the ball moved half-the-distance to the goal. The Dragons opted to try for two, but were unsuccessful, leaving the score at 22-6.
Prescott took over at its 42 following a pooch kick, and drove 58 yards in two plays with Hopson breaking free on a 50-yard run. The PAT was blocked making it 28-6.
Prescott had problems converting points after touchdowns most of the game from the second quarter on.
The Dragons took over at the Wolf 49 following an onside kick attempt. It didn’t matter as Genoa turned the ball over on downs four plays later at the Wolf 38.
Prescott drove to the Dragon 27 before time ran out in the half.
The Wolves got the ball to start the second half and drove 65-yards in seven play, with Jacaylon Zachery scoring from eight-yards out. The PAT was blocked leaving the score 34-6.
Genoa kept the ball seven plays, moving from its 38 to the Prescott 16 before trying a 33-yard field goal, which went wide left.
Three plays later Travion Dickens found pay dirt on a five-yard run to make it 40-6. The PAT was no good.
With 7:16 left in the third, Genoa started its second scoring drive of the night on its 35. The Dragons used 10 plays, with the score coming on a six-yard fun with 2:43 left in the period. The PAT made it 40-13.
Prescott added another touchdown to make it 46-13, again being unable to convert points after touchdowns. The teams battled back and forth until late in the fourth quarter.
Prescott took over for the final time at its 21 with 4:17 left in the game. The Wolves drove the length of the field, scoring on the final play of the game when Eric Grigsby went in from the eight.
