Wolves post 47-20 win over Smackover

PRESCOTT – Friday night’s game between Prescott and Smackover was a strange one. However, the Wolves remain undefeated with a 47-20 win over the Buckaroos.
The first half went quickly, taking a bit more than an hour. The second half went by as quickly as molasses in sub-zero weather as incomplete passes and penalties slowed the game slower than a snail’s pace. Prescott is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the Bucks are 5-3 and 2-1. The fight in he 5AAA conference is for second place as the Wolves are the lone undefeated team in the league. The win could very well make Prescott conference champs.
Smackover came with a small squad numerically, but the Bucks had plenty of fight, never giving up and giving the Wolves all the team wanted and then some.
Prescott took the opening kick, with Jerry Glass falling on the short kick at the Wolf 39. Seven plays later, Travion Dickens went in from two-yards out. The point after made it 7-0. Carston Poole attempted two passes on the drive, both incomplete. Basically, the ground game led to the initial score.
Smackover started at its 17 and drove to the Prescott 48 before turning the ball over on downs.
Dickens lost to the 40 on first down. Poole’s third attempt was tipped and picked off by a Buck, returned to the Smackover 47.
The Bucks went to the air, gaining 10 yards on the team’s first pass attempt. From there, three plays netted three yards, but Smackover opted to go for it on fourth down. A pass interference call against the Wolves moved the ball to the 19, where the drive stalled as the Bucks ended up turning it over on downs for the second time in the frame.
Prescott ran six plays, getting to the 43 as the period ended. Two plays into the second quarter, Poole connected with Jaylen Johnson for a 45-yard score. The PAT made it 14-0 as the Wolf offense appeared to be ready to take control of the contest.
A bobbled kick stranded the Bucks at the 12. Three plays later, Smackover punted to midfield, where the Wolves took over.
Dickens took the ball up the gut and raced in for the third touchdown of the game. The PAT made it 21-0 with 10:09 left in the half.
The Bucks started at the 15 and drove to the Wolf 27 before again turning it over on downs.
It took eight plays and overcoming an illegal motion call for Prescott to score its fourth touchdown of the half. The score came on a one-yard run by Poole. The PAT made it 28-0 with 4:02 showing and it looked, for all intents and purposes, as though the mercy rule would be in effect before the game ended.
This wasn’t to be, though, as Smackover had other ideas. Starting at the Buck 29, the team drove 71 yards in 12 plays, scoring on a 12-yard pass. The Bucks tried a two-point conversion which was no god, leaving the score 28-6. Still, the Wolves only needed two scores to ice the game early.
Period three saw the Bucks set up shop at the Smackover 27. However, it was three and out, with the punt rolling to the Prescott 12.
At this point, the wheels came off for the Wolves as penalty flags flew often. On the drive, Prescott was penalized five times and saw a Poole pass tipped up and picked off for six. The try for two was again no good, leaving the score 28-12.
Smackover was hit with an offside call on the kick moving the ball to the 35. Still, the Bucks attempted an onside kick Tidorian Thompson fell on at the Prescott 47.
Dickens took the handoff and, 53-yards later, was in the Buckaroo end zone. The PAT was no good, leaving the score at 34-12 with 7:57. This also ended scoring for the Wolves in the third.
Smackover, however, scored twice more. After driving to the 42, the Bucks punted to the Prescott 23.
Brenan Bradley lost five on first down. A high snap on second down sailed over Poole’s head and into the end zone, where a Smackover player, while attempting to recover the fumble, knocked the ball out of the end zone for a safety. This made it 34-14
The kick was returned to the Prescott 46. Seven plays later, the Bucks scored on a five-yard run to make it 34-20 as the try for two was again no good.
Prescott returned the kick to its 42 with the Wolves called for holding on first down, nullifying a completion and moving the ball to the Wolf 46. The frame ended with Dickens gaining three yards.
In the first half, six penalties were called, two in the first period and four in the second. In the third, though, 10 flags were thrown on the two teams, with three more raining down in the fourth quarter.
The final 12 minutes started with Prescott facing a second and four at its 49. Poole gained two to the Buck 49, before finding a massive hole in the middle of the defense on the next play and rambling to the eight. Dickens went in on the next play. The PAT made it 41-20 with 11:18 left in the game.
Smackover’s offense got the ball two more times, turning it over on downs both times.
Prescott’s offense got the ball three more times in the period, turning it over on downs twice.
Smackover’s final drive started at the Buck 38 and made it to the Prescott 38 before the Wolf defense stepped up and recorded a sack on third down. A fourth down pass fell harmlessly to the turf giving Prescott the ball at its 45.
Relying solely on the ground game, the Wolves covered 55-yards in five plays with Tiquan Box putting the finishing touch on with a 20-yard run to make it 47-20. The extra point attempt hit the upright.
This basically ended the game.
Prescott was initially scheduled to play Parkers Chapel on Oct. 29, but the team dropped to eight-man football. Therefore, the Wolves will have a week off to recover. The final game is scheduled against Horatio Thursday, Nov. 3, at Horatio. However, the Lions have cancelled on the Wolves the last two years, so whether the game is played or not is unknown at this time.
