This year’s Juneteenth Parade in Hope started just down the street from Yerger and went to Northside Park where there were food trucks, bounce houses, and a recounting of history by Ale Mae Flenory. Ms. Flenory showed participants pictures of “now and then”. She started off with the history of having been born with a midwife’s help and talked about making $4 a day while working for 10 hours and having to pay 50 cents for a ride to work. Ms. Flenory said cookies had been 10 for 5 cents and she was able to get cookies and pop for 25 cents. She also talked about having to go in the back door at the doctor’s office at 9 am and maybe not being seen until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Throughout the speech there were exclamations of praise as to how much easier life had gotten.
