Curtain Closes on a Magical Week at the 2025 S.T.A.R. Academy in Hope

The Southwest Arkansas Arts Council (SWAAC) recently wrapped up another successful S.T.A.R. Academy, a weeklong drama camp held July 21–25 at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana (UAHT) Rapert Library Complex.

Fifteen enthusiastic students, ranging from rising 1st through 12th graders, participated in this year’s camp. Many were returning actors eager to build on past experiences, while others stepped onto the stage for the first time. Throughout the week, students learned lines, crafted props, rehearsed scenes, and explored the art of performance.

The camp culminated in a joyful final performance of “Bippity Boppity Oops!” on July 25 at 6:00 p.m., where family and community members filled the Rapert Library stage area with laughter and applause. “The audience loved it,” organizers said. “There were lots of laughs and shining moments.”

Directed by Chris Espinosa and funded in part by a grant from the Arkansas Department of Heritage, the camp also received support from local artist Gretchen Franzen, who volunteered to guide students in creating artwork and set pieces.

Rachel Pendergraft, Executive Art Director of SWAAC, reflected on the deeper value of the week:

“Once the kids have their lines down and are no longer worried about ‘getting it wrong,’ they really begin to let their personalities shine through. That’s my favorite part — seeing them truly own their characters and bring them to life. It’s in those moments that their creativity and confidence blossom.

Facing an audience with all eyes on you and delivering a performance, while also learning to collaborate with others, builds valuable life skills. But beyond that, nurturing their creative talents—especially at a time when arts programs aren’t always available due to funding—reminds them that creativity has a place. What they’re driven to do creatively matters, and the work they put into it is valued.”

With daily lunch, supportive instruction, and an encouraging environment, the camp provided students not just with a fun experience but also with tools for growth—on stage and beyond.

SWAAC extends heartfelt thanks to the UAHT for hosting, to Chris Espinosa and Gretchen Franzen for their leadership, and to the families and community members who helped make this year’s S.T.A.R. Academy a success. Plans for next year are already underway, with hopes to open registration earlier to give students more time to prepare and grow.
