Background on historic Prairie D’Ane

PRESCOTT – Prairie D’Ane is the best-preserved section of a much larger prairie that existed at the time of the Civil War and was used by the Caddo tribe before European settlers came to the area. The historic prairie extended through Prescott and over to Moscow. The battle line was 30 miles long.

Prairie D’Ane is managed by the Nevada County Depot Museum Non-Profit that raised the money and it is run by volunteers. The money to fund it comes from solely from private donations and money generated by the Prairie. The site has both the largest tourism draws that state has – Historic Tourism and the Outdoors.

The project is expected to grow with time as more is added to it. Trails are being built, invasive species being removed.

The goal of the organization is not only to have a tourist attraction for those from elsewhere but also to make it a place for locals to enjoy as well.

A lot of hard work was done to acquire the land and to restore it.

The local community is welcome to volunteer. While there is a gate to prevent vehicular traffic except at events held at the Prairie, it is open all the time for walking. There are a fishing pond and a picnic area near the entrance.
