A Bicentennial year bug from Hope of Smithsonian exhibition

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Bicentennial artifact from Hempstead County is at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in an exhibit entitled “From These Lands: Sharing Our Natural and Cultural Heritage.”

An Eastern leaf-footed bug captured in Hope in 1976 is featured. The exhibition commemorates America’s 250th anniversary through more than 600 rare objects and specimens representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories. The exhibition explores the people, landscapes, discoveries, traditions, and defining moments that have shaped the United States.
