Peggy Gulley was born on March 23, 1946, to Galvesta (Latin) Lindsey and Manuel Butler. She was lovingly raised by her grandparents, A.C. and Pearl Latin. Peggy passed away on August 24, 2026, leaving behind a family who will cherish her life and memory.
Peggy worked for Potlatch for many years before retiring. She also worked at First United Methodist Church as a janitor and cared for children during church services, a responsibility she later passed on to her daughters. Peggy also opened her heart and home as a foster mother to more than 20 children, providing them with care and support.
Peggy joined St. Luke AME Church at an early age, where she served in many capacities. She later united with Ward Chapel AME Church. After relocating to Texarkana, TX, she joined St. James AME Church. She eventually relocated back to Ward Chapel AME Church, where she served faithfully until her health declined.
Peggy was the mother of six children: Harry Dickens (Elquita), Vesta Henry, Jessica Box-Marshall (Curtis), Matty Box Johnson (Derwin), and Walter T. Burton Sr. (Kelley), which includes her adopted child, Latisha Franklin.
She joined in holy matrimony to Olandus Gulley on December 29, 1983. During their marriage, they adopted Latisha Franklin. Olandus preceded her in death in May 2014.
She is also remembered by her sisters, Elnora Combs (Elmo) and Lucy Lawson. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Galvesta Lindsey and Manuel Butler; Elmore Lindsey; her grandparents, A.C. and Pearl Latin; sisters, Julia Easter, Vora L. Lindsey, Juanita Lindsey, and Rosetta Lindsey; brothers, Elmore Lindsey Jr., James L. Lindsey, Jermiah Lindsey, Delma Lindsey, and Charley Lindsey.
Peggy was a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren: Harrison Dickens, Jordan Dickens, Trent Barrow Sr., Jasmine Box, Anthony Box (Laquisha), Curtis Marshall, FL’Justice Burton, Keyshawn Fortson, Madysen Burton, Walter T. Burton Jr., and Autumn Burton.
She was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren: Dylia Ingram, Ava Williams, Aria Box, Cyncere Box, Harli Box, Alia Williams, Trent Barrow Jr., Elizabeth Barrow, and Brooklyn Williams.
She also leaves to cherish her memory a very special aunt who was raised like a sister, Joyce Smith, along with many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
