Herndon- Fuqua Funeral Home hosted a fish fry to honor local first responders recently at the Prescott Senior Center along with their families, serving around 45 people, according to Amy Damron of the Texarkana branch, who attended the event. Amy Helmick, manager of the Hope, Prescott and Gurdon branches said,
“We wanna say thank you for the job they do. Because sometimes it’s a thankless job that they are in. And they are committed, and we are committed to serving them.” The event recognized members of the sheriff’s department, city police, volunteer fire and rescue departments, jailers, Pafford Ambulance Service and other first responders and their families.
Chief Deputy Larry Miller of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department, serving since 2009, said, “We really appreciate everything they do, and it’s a great honor.” He praised local volunteers, noting that ‘they’ve been busy lately with all the fires and stuff that’s going on.’ He added that the volunteer fire departments are “outstanding” in Nevada County.
Miller also praised local police, ambulance services and auxiliary volunteers with the sheriff’s department, emphasizing how, “everybody works well together.” The Herndon Fuquay team members who helped prepare and serve the meal included Vickers Fuqua, owner, Buzzy Terrell, general manager, Randall Cato, funeral home assistant, plus Afton Dew, Helmick, Lindsay Gwinn of the Texarkana branch, and Kaylee Ausbon, who also works with the Hope, Prescott and Gurdon branch.. They helped cook the fish, serve the food, and prepare plates, and lots of to-go plates.
