NHS seniors honored at award ceremony
ROSSTON – Seniors were recognized during an awards ceremony in the Nevada High School gym Wednesday morning.
The morning began, though, with members of the senior class donning their caps and gowns for the traditional “Senior Walk” through the school’s hallways with the rest of the student body gathered in the halls watching.
From there, the seniors changed back into street clothes for the assembly.
The assembly began with Principal Michael Odom saying he’s proud of what the Class of 2017 has accomplished, pointing out several would be awarded scholarships.
Jamie Hillery, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, presented Arkansas Scholarships to 11 seniors, and named Tanner Stone the recipient of the Chamber Scholarship, valued at $250.
Tiffany Smith, with Upward Bound, presented two scholarships, one for $5,000 and the other for $2,500.
Whitney Hall, from Southern Arkansas University, told the audience seven NHS seniors had accepted more than $112,000 in scholarships from SAU.
Herbert Coleman followed presenting the Oak Grove Alumni Scholarship and a scholarship from William Brazzel.
Other scholarship winners were recognized, with nine more awarded the Arkansas Academic Scholarships provided by the Arkansas Lottery.
From there, achievement awards were presented by grade level by the teachers of each class.
Nevada’s commencement exercises will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the NHS gym. This year there will be 27 graduates will receive their diplomas.
